Sophie Theallet’s rooftop runway show near Hudson Yards has the fashion world abuzz.
The thrilling beat of a Senegalese troupe of drummers permeated the open air with a vitality seldom experienced at a fashion show. As the band drummed, Theallet sent models arrayed in African-inspired designs out onto the earthen catwalk.
The show drew attention for its fresh musical style and flowing, African-style designs as well as the diversity of its models. The New York Times called it “what may have been among the most diverse group of models yet seen at fashion week.” Over half were African-American or Asian, and one fuller-figured model rocked an innovative lace jumpsuit.
Theallet chose the top of a 10-story warehouse near Hudson Yards for her show. The show will likely accelerate her rise in the fashion world; such a stir may put Hudson Yards in the fashion spotlight as well.
