The former Bayview Correctional Facility in Chelsea is going to become a hub for women’s rights and activism, DNAinfo reports.

The facility’s days as a correctional facility drew to a close in 2013. In its new life as “The Women’s Building,” the space will become a center for activism and advocacy that includes offices, an art gallery, a restaurant, community spaces and a health clinic. The building’s website describes a “vertical neighborhood” in which social justice intertwines with social and professional life.

The building’s developers have announced an international competition to design the facility. Architects must create plans that fulfill the center’s vision as well as preserve the building’s historic structure.

NoVo Foundation and the Goren Group are the developers of the project. NoVo Foundation strives to promote social change through its investment in women’s rights. Goren Group is a development and investment company that is owned and operated by women. The two have up to a 100-year lease on the building.
